Big Air has a new home - Fenway Park

  • Big Air has a new home - Fenway Park

When we hear the words ‘Fenway Park’, we think ‘baseball’. ‘Red Soxs’. ‘Inner city Boston’. ‘Snowboarding’ and ‘skiing’ are not words we would normally associate with the famed grounds.

We may still have about four months to wait, but the recently announced ‘Big Air at Fenway’ will be here before we know it. But for snowboarding and skiing fans, it will seem like a lifetime.

Boston, despite being incredibly snowy and vociferous in its love for the Bruins, is starved of winter sports.

Big Air Snowboarding is already confirmed for the 2018 Winter Olympics, so this is yet another step in the right direction. As Olympic gold medallist Sage Kotsenburg said, “Snowboarding came from the East Coast, it’s where it’s from, and there’s a lot of roots out here, and a lot of diehard snowboard fans… something of this stature needed to happen inside the states for sure. It’ll be the coolest big air event I’ve ever been a part of, and I’ve been a part of a lot of big air events in my day.”

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association is determined to make this one iconic event. “We wanted to show to the world that this is going to not only meet the world at what they’re doing, but we’re going to surpass it”, said Calum Clark. And with a 140 foot ramp (Fenway’s Green Monster is a less threatening 37 feet) resulting in athletes flying from center field to the pitcher’s mound, it’s safe to say it can stand up against the largest big air comps in the world.

This event is a major stop on the International Ski Federation’s World Cup and the U.S. Grand Prix Freeskiing and Snowboarding Tour, so we can be guaranteed one thing. The best Olympic and X Games athletes, doing crazy things.
