Better swells are expected soon, so now is the perfect time to take a look back at the first three rounds of the Billabong Pro Tahiti.
Gabriel Medina looks like his old self, finally regaining ground after some mediocre surfing in the last few stops. Some are touting his heat against John John Florence as one of the most exciting heats of 2015. With Florence back after missing two stops due to injury, he couldn't quite match up to Medina in the 5-foot surf, ending it with 18.84.
Medina was relieved to make it through. “John John is one of the best out here, and he's my favorite surfer. That was a good battle, and we both got a few nines… it's great to make one more heat… It's good to be making heats again after a lot of loss at the beginning of the year”.
Fellow Brazilian and little-known Bruno Santos sent his good friend and current leader Adriano de Souza home.”I really want to see him win the title at the end of the year”, he was quick to say.
Meanwhile, Mick Fanning was defeated by Aritz Aranburu, but at this point, he was probably just happy not to encounter another shark.
Early prediction: while Australians Julian Wilson and Owen Wright will do well, a Brazilian will win this time – either Medina or Filipe Toledo.
