Vans US Open and Van Doren Invitational end with upset wins

  • Vans US Open and Van Doren Invitational end with upset wins

As with any competition, there were some favorites tipped to win the Vans US Open and Van Doren Invitational. Did they? No.

Instead, history was made when Hiroto Ohhara became the first Japanese surfer to win the US Open.

The crowd had expected Filipe Toledo to win again, but little known Tanner Hendrickson stunned everyone by winning his semi against Toledo. In the final though, Ohhara's style made him the victor.

Dennis Ennarson's winning streak continued when he won the BMX title at the Van Doren Invitational. Daniel Sandoval, another big name on the circuit took 3rd place.

Everyone's favorite, Curren Caples was unable to finish at the Skate finals, coming away with a fracture that will put him on the couch for awhile. This made the way for Ben Hatchell to take the win.

Another year, more upsets. It doesn't get any better!
