Just when we were all caught up in the action from the final day of the J Bay Open, this happened:
The action before this:
After a highly anticipated Superheat the day before (which turned out to be anything but), Kelly Slater defeated Michel Bourez, then Gabriel Medina in their quarter today. But as both Medina and Slater have been experiencing their worst season ever, it's no surprise that Slater was later eliminated in SF 2 by Mick Fanning. It's almost painful watching one of the world's best surfers struggle against the less experienced, but that's life.
Earlier, Mick Fanning defeated Keanu Asing, then Alejo Muniz, who until this point, had been the bright spark of the Open and the one to watch, posting so many impressive scores.
Julian Wilson effortlessly demolished Wiggolly Dantas, then Adrian Buchan, continuing with his good streak that started at the end of the last season.
The WSL has done a wise thing and now called off the final. In accordance with rule book, Fanning and Wilson will get 8000 points each and split the prize money equally. Adriano de Souza is still first on the leaderboard. But at this point, the boys are probably just glad not to have to get back in the water.
