Just when we were all caught up in the action from the final day of the J Bay Open, this happened:
Mick Fanning's quick thinking got him out of a very scary situation, unscathed. Julian Wilson furiously paddled over to deter the shark away from his good friend.— #JBayOpen (@wsl) July 19, 2015
While waiting for the final to resume, let's look at what happened before that shark came along.
After a highly anticipated Superheat the day before (which turned out to be anything but), Kelly Slater defeated Michel Bourez, then Gabriel Medina in their quarter today. But as both Medina and Slater have been experiencing their worst season ever, it's no surprise that Slater was later eliminated in SF 2 by Mick Fanning. It's almost painful watching one of the world's best surfers struggle against the less experienced, but that's life.
Earlier, Mick Fanning defeated Keanu Asing, then Alejo Muniz, who until this point, had been the bright spark of the Open and the one to watch, posting so many impressive scores.
Julian Wilson effortlessly demolished Wiggolly Dantas, then Adrian Buchan, continuing with his good streak that started at the end of the last season.
So the final between these two buddies will be on again today. But they probably both feel like winners.
