Another year, another emotionally charged ESPYS night. Athletes, teams and coaches were celebrated, but the night was one of tears too, with tributes to late coach Stuart Scott, Devon Still’s daughter battling cancer, and Lauren Hill. With the awards decided by public votes, did the ESPYs go to the right people and for the right reasons?
Best Record-Breaking Performance: Peyton Manning, 509th career TD pass This was a big deal, for sure. Happy with the winner? Heck yeah! But the attention was on Brett Favre babysitting Peyton’s daughter...
Best Championship Performance: LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers He almost single-handedly carried the Cavs through the NBA playoffs, so this guy deserved the award. Certainly, it will alleviate some of the pain from the Cavs’ Championship loss.
Best Comeback Athlete: Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots Gronk came back full force after severe injuries, whereas Lindsey Vonn never quite performed the way she used to. If she'd won, it wouldn’t have been based on skill.
Best NFL Player: Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers Both he and Peyton Manning deserved this award. We can only guess that votes were pretty darn close.
Best NBA Player and Best Male Athlete: Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors The fans can't get enough of him. Obviously. But really, he played remarkably this season, and he's just a good guy. Can't fault him.
Best Moment Award: Lauren Hill’s first college game Lauren’s parents accepted the award on her behalf. She was one determined girl.
Best Fighter and Best Female Athlete: Rhonda Rousey With an 11-0 record, she deserved these wins. Girl power.
Best Male Tennis Player: Novak Djokovic Would've been nice to see Roger get it this time, since Novak won last year. Oh well, still deserved it!
Best Female Tennis Player: Serena Williams She's the best female tennis player in the world, and a plain good person to boot. Enough said.
Best Male Action Sports Athlete: Ryan Dungey, Motocross Mark McMorris or last year’s winner Nyjah Huston, were expected to take the award. But go Ryan!
Best Female Action Sports Athlete: Kelly Clark, snowboarding She missed out last year, so we’re stoked for her winning this time around. She has phenomenal skill, so she definitely deserved this!
Best NHL Player: Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks It must've come down to him and Duncan Keith. Close? Probably!
Best MLB Player: Mike Trout, LA Angels MVP and now ESPY? It's a big year for him!
Pat Tillman Award for Service: Danielle Green The injured U.S. Army vet battled and persevered. Inspiring.
Best Golfer: Jordan Spieth He's played some big golf and won a couple of big Opens. He's so likeable.
Best Play: Odell Beckham Jr’s one handed catch. Will we ever get tired of seeing footage of that ridiculous catch? Probably not.
Best Team: USWNT Their World Cup win is still fresh in everyone's mind. Boy, did they make the nation proud.
